Gifts for Gardeners with Mike Darcy

December 14, 2020

I recently went into the Lake Oswego Wilco store to get some ideas for this blog on gifts for the home gardener. I went into the store with an open mind, thinking that I would get a few ideas on items that would be useful and pertinent for a gardener. Within a short amount of time, my note pad was full of ideas. Most all gardeners can use a new tool or gadget to help them with their gardening chores and giving a gift that is useful is one of the best kinds.

The gift selections listed below are items that I can see myself using as well as other gardeners that I know. The listing is arranged in order of their cost, beginning with the least expensive. While not all items would necessarily be available in every store, I believe that most would.

Less than $5.00

Some of the brands of flower and vegetable seeds for 2021 are now available. The seed company Botanical Interest has full racks with a wide variety of organic flower and vegetable seed packets. These packets are very colorful and several packets tied together with a ribbon would make a good stocking stuffer.
Suet packets for the birds. Many gardeners encourage birds into their garden and especially during the winter months, suet blocks are a welcome treat. I have found that a suet block will attract a wide variety of birds.

Almost any gardener can use a new pair of rubber gloves. This would be a very useful and practical gift. I always like to have several pair available because I am constantly forgetting where I put them.

Less than $10.00

A box of Down to Earth All-Natural Fertilizer All Purpose 4-6-2 would be useful for any gardener even those gardening in containers on a deck, balcony or patio. There are different flavors available and it is easy to select a particular one for the gardeners’ favorite plants.

Less than $15.00

There is a trend in gardening to encourage plants into the garden that help with pollination. Many of us are probably aware of some of the difficulties that honeybees are facing. Another bee that is excellent for pollinating, especially early in the season, is the mason bee. Wilco has mason bee supplies including a Mason Bee House. Having a nesting structure for mason bees is an ideal teaching tool for kids to learn about nature. The bee itself is about the size of a fly and can be handled, it rarely stings and the sting is more like a mosquito bite. Let kids watch these bees fly back and forth and build their nest.

Another gift idea to get kids involved in gardening would be the Green Thumb Mini Shovel. This is a working shovel and a perfect size for young gardeners. Let your kids, grandkids, dig along with you when working in the garden.

There are many different hummingbird feeders available within this price range. Watch these magnificent birds up close and marvel at their speed and ability to hover. Having supplemental food for them in the winter can be a much-needed treat.

Less than $30.00

The ultimate trowel would be a gift of the Dewit Forged Trowel. This is a very high-quality trowel that is made with tempered steel.

A dual gift would be the Dewit Forged Fork which is great for breaking up soil in small areas. These are two tools that an avid gardener would love.

This one really caught my eye and may soon be a purchase for my garden. It is a Squirrel Resistant 4 Port Squirrel Resistant Feeder. This is made so that birds can land on a perch and get the seed, but the weight of a squirrel will close the opening. This looked to be a sturdy feeder that was made to last.

These are just some suggestions on gardening gifts. When you know the gardener, it makes the gift giving easier but the items that I’ve mentioned would be useful to many gardeners.

Happy Gift Giving!
