Traeger Ham with Sweet Potatoes

Traeger Ham and Sweet Potatoes. Don't just warm up that smoked ham. Add some sweetness and spice by trying this Wilco Traeger recipe. Watch the DIY video here.

[ux_video url="https://vimeo.com/374055782"] Ingredients: Roasting pan- (I used a large aluminum one) Walla Walla Onion- 2 (Can use any yellow onion to your taste)- roughly cut and put in roasting pan to baste with ham juices as it cooks. Traeger Hickory Pellets (Need approximately 2lb) Clover Honey- 4Tbsp Olive Oil- 4Tbsp for spice rub, 2Tbsp each for baked potatoes Smoked Paprika- 1Tbsp Ground Garlic- 2Tbsp Garlic Cloves- 5 or 6 (for inserting in ham meat) Onion Flakes- 1Tbsp Ground Cayenne Pepper or Powder- 1 ½ Tbsp Orange- 2 large oranges (fresh squeeze for spice rub, then place squeezed oranges in roasting pan with onions) Traeger Prep Preheat your Traeger Grill to 300 degrees and plug-in temperature probe (if you have one- can use a hand-held one as well to check the temperature but grill temp will reduce each time lid is opened.
  • Set temperature probe to alarm at 145 degrees.
  • After 30 minutes of cooking time, raise the grill temperature to 325 degrees for the remainder of cooking time.
Sweet Potatoes: Dig fresh sweet potatoes from your garden (or local grocer)- as many as you’d like for a couple of meals.
  • Clean sweet potatoes. You’ll find if they are garden fresh, you won’t need to remove the skins or peel them. If you are using potatoes from the grocer, you may want to peel them as the skins are much thicker.
  • Place sweet potatoes on foil
  • Pour about 3 Tbsp on top of potatoes
  • Fold in all sides and place on the upper rack of the grill
  • Cook Sweet Potatoes for approximately 1 hour at 300- 325 degrees- check for tenderness. They should be soft to touch when done.
Spice Rub for Ham:
  • Mix olive oil, honey, smoked paprika, ground garlic, onion flakes, cayenne pepper and orange juice in a medium bowl.
  • Score the surface of the ham (no more than 1/8” deep) to allow the rub to penetrate the meat.
Ham: Used in this recipe is a pre-smoked half-ham, 6-8lb. Greater weights or uncooked ham will require increased cooking time and slightly different methods.
  • Minimum internal temperature for ham is 145 degrees
  • Generously rub the entire surface of the ham with spice rub so that all crevices, cuts, and surface is coated well. (Use latex gloves so that cayenne pepper doesn’t irritate your skin or get into eyes)
  • Place ham into roasting pan and place on the grill grate in preheated Traeger (300 degrees for first 30 minutes, and 325 degrees for the remainder of cooking time- approximately 1 ½ hours).
  • Check ham after 45 minutes to 1 hour and ladle juices over the top to finish cooking.
