House Sparrow

House Sparrow

The House Sparrow is a familiar sight in both urban and rural areas of the Pacific Northwest. With its small yet plump body and stout beak, this sparrow exudes a sense of resilience and adaptability. The male House Sparrow displays a striking combination of gray, brown, and black feathers, with a distinctive black bib on its chest. The female, on the other hand, showcases a more muted palette of brown and gray. Known for their energetic and social nature, House Sparrows are often seen in bustling flocks, hopping and chirping merrily in search of food. Their cheerful and melodic songs add a lively soundtrack to neighborhoods and city parks. House Sparrows have thrived in human-altered environments, making their homes in nooks and crannies of buildings, nesting in eaves and crevices. Though considered common, their adaptability and close proximity make them a species that allows us to appreciate the beauty and resilience of even the most familiar of our avian neighbors.

Food: Seeds, grains, blossoms, insects, fruit and food scraps. At backyard feeders, prefers Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, Cracked Corn, Hulled Sunflower Seeds, Millet, Milo and Peanuts Hearts.
