How to Find the Perfect Pair of Jeans

Wearing jeans while herding on horse

Shopping for denim jeans can be difficult, especially with inconsistent sizing and lengths across denim designers, not to mention the wide range of styles: bootcut, skinny, relaxed, and slim.

Whether you are planning to look for a casual hang with friends or clean the barn, here are a few tips to help you find the right denim cut and fit.

Pro tip: Keep your denim in great shape with our denim care tips.

Measure Your Favorite Pair of Jeans

Start by measuring a pair of denim jeans you already own that fit perfectly. Lay them flat on a hard surface. Measure across the waistline using a measuring tape. Your waist size will be this number doubled, although it can vary depending on the jeans’ rise.

Measure the inseam, and the distance from the crotch seam to the hem of the ankle. In addition, measure the width of the thigh. Start two inches under the crotch seam and double the measurement to get your thigh measurement.

Finally, you will need to measure the rise of the jeans with the waist pulled tight. Low-rise jeans tend to measure 7-8 inches from waist to crotch, 8-9 inches for mid-rise, and 10 inches for high rise.

Find Your Best Rise

The rise refers to the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband and determines where it sits on your body. For the best fit, choose a rise that conforms to your body’s contours.

Low-rise jeans tend to sit 2-3 inches (or lower) below the belly button. Mid-rise jeans sit right under the navel. High-rise jeans sit at or right above the belly button. Ultimately, rises are based on personal preference. Use a tape measure to see how your best-fitting jeans would look with different rises.

Measure Your Waistline

Where you measure your waistline will depend on your rise preference. Natural waistlines are at the body’s natural crease, the point where you bend your waist to your side. Measure around the navel for mid-rise jeans or 2-3 inches below that for low-rise jeans.

Measure Your Inseam

To get the best fit, you will have to measure your inseam and the length from the crotch seam to the ankle hem. Some denim brands may offer customers different length options for shorter or taller individuals. Measure your inseam while wearing tight-fitting clothing to get the most accurate sizing.

Refer to the Brand Size Charts

Denim brands may provide customers with a size chart to make shopping for denim jeans easier. Some brands size their jeans in inches, numbers, or both. In some cases, your jeans size can vary between brands. It’s always best to try them out in person or ask a salesperson for guidance.
