Gift Ideas for the Gardener with Mike Darcy

December 5, 2022

With the holiday season upon us, here are some ideas to give the gardener in the family or the friend that is a gardener. Thinking of my own garden and what some of my favorite items are and especially those that need to be renewed, I recently visited the Wilco store in Lake Oswego and here are some gift suggestions. Item selections and prices may vary, but these items will probably be available in most stores.

UNDER $10

Atlas Gloves

These Atlas gloves have become a favorite of many gardeners and since they do eventually wear out, having an extra pair would probably be a welcome gift.

Cowpots

Cowpots would be a fun item to give and would probably be a good conversation starter. These pots are made from composted cow manure and are great for starting seeds. The entire pot can then be planted in the ground and will provide a source of fertilizer for newly planted transplants.

Wild Bird Suet

Several packets of suet would make a good stocking stuffer. Many gardeners feed birds, especially during the winter months and a great dual gift would be suet and a suet cage. It is everything a novice needs to get started.

Rose Handler Gloves

This pair of gloves with gauntlet helps protect wrists and arms. Especially appropriate for the gardener with roses or other plants with thorns such as many berry plants. For rose pruning, it’s a ‘must’.

Sunflower Hearts Wild Bird Food

Sunflower Hearts attract a variety of different birds. I have used them in my garden for years and especially like the fact that there is no mess. What seeds fall to the ground are quickly gone by ground feeders.

Soaker Hose

With weather patterns changing and our summers getting hotter with less rain, this SoakerPRO soaker hose would make a good gift for the gardener that does not have an automated sprinkler system. Weave this soaker hose throughout a flower or vegetable bed, cover with soil or compost and your water will go directly to the roots without evaporating.

Mason Bee Habitat

Encouraging beneficial insects into the garden is high on many gardeners’ list. This ‘A’ frame mason bee house would be an ideal way as a beginning step in making a garden ‘bee friendly’. This would be a good gift for a young potential gardener and a way to get young people involved in gardening and to learn about their environment.

For the gardener that wants to get a head start, this seedling mat is ideal. Whether plants are started from seed or cuttings, many will respond favorably to warm soil.

AdLok Chainlock Ties

One of my favorite gifts, that I bought myself, is this AgLok tying device. Most gardeners, at some time during the season, have to tie-up plants. You can forget about string and twine with this system and the ties last all year and can easily be adjusted to increase or decrease, depending on what is needed. It is the best tying system that I have found.

Soil Test Kit

Of all the gifts mentioned, if I had to pick just one, it would be this Soil Test Kit. Before planting anything, it is important to know something about your soil and what it needs. Having a soil test is often neglected and it should be one of the most important tasks. Many future problems with plants can be greatly diminished by adding the nutrients that a soil lacks. This is a quick and easy way to find out what is in your soil. Follow directions and scoop up some soil and send it off in the prepaid postage envelope. Your results will come back with an analysis of your specific soil. The results may surprise you, it certainly did me.
