Your June Garden Checklist with Mike Darcy

Blooming marigolds planted to the ground in the garden

A reminder about gardening and these checklists. To plant a garden and for it to thrive is dependent on many factors including the location, (sun/shade), soil, watering, variety of plant, nutrients available, and many other factors but most of all is something that we cannot control, and that is the weather. In my garden during the first two weeks of April, it has experienced, snow, rain, more rain, nighttime temperatures almost to freezing, hail, wind, and sometimes even the sun. Living in the Pacific Northwest, with an ocean and mountains both in close proximity, it is difficult to predict the weather. Use these Wilco Garden Checklists as a guide.

Tomato plant growing in garden

Tomatoes

I once had a long-time gardener tell me that if you plant a tomato on May 1, and another on June 1, by July 1, it will probably not be noticeable which one was planted first. Tomato plants like warm weather and need sun to grow and produce tomatoes. Our spring weather had certainly not been accommodating for the conditions that tomatoes need to thrive. June is an ideal month for planting and hopefully the temperature will be cooperative. Tomatoes are a plant that readily produces roots along the stem and because of this, it is one of the few plants that it is recommended be planted deeper than the container it is in. Remove some of the lower leaves and the roots that form along the stem will help support the plant.

Man starting lawnmower in grass, preparing to mow lawn

Lawns

Usually, lawns should be mowed to keep the grass 2 – 2.5 inches tall. If a weed and feed product has not been used, grass clippings can be added to the compost pile and will encourage the decomposition process. Fresh green grass clippings will make the compost pile get ‘hot’. If the lawn is going to be kept green all summer, this would be a good time to add a nitrogen fertilizer.

pick and red geraniums on display

Summer Annuals

Summer annuals can be planted in containers and in the ground. Petunias, marigolds, zinnias, cosmos, geraniums, salvia, are all excellent for summer color. These need a sunny location to perform at their best. Mix an all-purpose fertilizer into the soil at time of planting. If gardening organically, add blood meal at time of planting because this will provide nitrogen, which is the nutrient that most plants will need the most.

Pink dahlias in full bloom

Dahlias

Dahlias are wonderful plants for summer color. Many plants will be in bloom at this time and blooming should continue well into the fall. Keep flowers picked for continuous bloom. Check plant labels on dahlias to be certain of their approximate height because dahlias vary greatly in height with some growing less than 12 inches in height to others that can reach 6 feet or more. Don’t make the mistake of planting 6-foot dahlias in the front of a flower bed! Tall dahlias usually need to be staked to prevent them from falling over and a sturdy wooden stake is wise to use at planting time.

aphid on birch sapling

Birch Trees & Aphids

Birch trees will often have a sticky fluid that drips from their leaves. It can be quite a disgusting mess for patio chairs or tables that are under the tree. This sticky fluid is the result of aphids, and an aphid control should be applied. One application is usually not enough to get control and a repeat application may be needed.

June is a busy month for gardeners because there is a lot going on in the garden. If the soil is warm, plant bean seeds. Protect the new seedlings from birds with a netting or screen until the plants get established. Roses are probably blooming, and old flowers should be removed. Monitor plants for disease issues especially black spot and remove any rose leaves that are showing signs of this disease. There are sprays that will help with control and prevent black spot from spreading.

Even though there is lots to do in the June garden, make some time to relax and enjoy it.

MIKE’S GARDEN IS LOCATED IN OREGON’S WILLAMETTE VALLEY AND HIS ADVICE IS CONSISTENT WITH THE MILD CLIMATE THERE.
